Gary the Rat was nominated for both the Best Comedy Animation Award and Best Comedic Series Award at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. Final versions of the episodes can be found at MediaTrip.com. MediaTrip tapped eStudio.com to take over animation chores after 3 episodes by another studio. We were responsible for touching up the first three episodes, and continuing on with the next 10 episodes which comprise the first season. We had a 4-week production cycle: 1 week each for storyboarding, clean-up and color, animation, and post production; and produced a new episode once a week, more or less, over the course of four months. Our team was headed by me and Animation Director Joel Reid; Flash art was created by Edwin Bocalan, Marcel Trenchard, David March, Alx Meza, and Steve Bobinski. Animation was done by Erik Knutson, Doug Gray, Alx Meza, Steve Bobinski, and Joel Reid, who also did a majority of post-production work. I was responsible for all storyboard/layout art, art direction, character and background design, timing and selection of shots. Additionally, I worked on the animatics, and various post-production tweaks [sound editing, continuity, etc.]

INTRO SEQUENCE Our first look at Gary and his transformation. This intro sequence was featured on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno when Kelsey Grammer was the guest. I was responsible for all of the animatic, timing, lineart, and coloring. Assists from Edwin Bocalan, Ken Martin, and Joel Reid.

EPISODE 04 Gary tries to close a deal with some Japanese businessmen at a real estate/ karaoke club. All pencil drawings, layout, timing, and animatic by me.

EPISODE 05 Gary gets into trouble at the theatre and ends up in jail. A few fun scenes in this one, especially the opening sequence at the theatre and the scene with Gary in the jail cell. All drawings and timing by me; animatic compiled with Erik Knutson.

EPISODE 06 Gary gets into trouble in the subway. Readers of my Talismen series may recognize the face on the poster on the subway wall. All drawings and timing by me; animatic compiled with Erik Knutson.

EPISODE 07 Gary finds three talking rats in the bowels of the city. One of my favorite episodes, because we were able to set a mood with the environment. All drawings and timing by me; animatic compiled with Erik Knutson.

EPISODE 08 Gary's worst nightmare realized: the cheese shop is on fire. This episode had a few shots that I'm particularly pleased with. There's a fake camera move through the wall that turned out quite nicely. All drawings and timing by me; animatic compiled with Erik Knutson.
